Week 14 Blog Post
As we watch technology
progresses at an increasingly quick rate, we have not been as diligent at monitoring
what this technology is being used for: mainly, the obstruction of our privacy.
Governments, companies, and even criminals can access records of private
information about you that you never even knew existed (much less consented to)
and pull sensitive information about you. And because of the digital footprint
you leave on the internet is stored and archived, information about you from
years in the past can be recovered and used against you. And because of our
lack of diligence monitoring technology’s impact on our privacy, we have not
made many significant laws or protections against sensitive breaches in privacy
on the internet. It can potentially take months for a person to go through the
legal system to retrieve leaked information, and the punishment for breaching someone’s
privacy is minor at best. In a world where the internet is becoming more
integrated in our society every day, and reliance on the internet is almost
mandatory, we have not done nearly enough to make sure that we are safe and
protected while using it and that there are legitimate punitive actions in
place for people who violate our private information.
